Like I mentioned, this newsletter will be sharing things I'm learning and seeing online about Google's SGE (search generative experience) and other SEO insights.

Something to keep in mind: SGE is still in beta, so some of this is speculation, or still in development. SGE was rolled out in May 2023 and yet it's not 100% launched, and things have changed already.

For those who are totally new to SGE, this is what it would/could look like:

The green box will show people the AI answer to their question, so that they don't have to scroll and click to different websites.

Now, you'll see that there ARE a few links in there that the AI has referenced, so you still could be the top spot.

Interestingly, "ranking number one" doesn't guarantee you appear in that AI answer though. Some have seen that the websites referenced in SGE actually "rank" in spot 8 or 9 for the keyword. (Why is setup this way? We don't know.)

Domain authority seems to be a MAJOR player in appearing in SGE, which is determined by a number of factors like how old your domain is and how much content you have on your website.

For reference, here are some domain authority numbers (on a scale of 1-100):

• Mailchimp: 93
• Me: 55
• A friend of mine with blogs and podcasts: 22
• A client of mine with blogs and podcasts: 41

So far, it seems domains appearing in SGE have an authority of 70 or above.

To wrap up, here are things that are going to be the most helpful with SEO moving forward:

• Backlinks (aka being on podcasts, writing guest blogs, etc.)
• Topical authority on your website (covering every aspect of your niche)
• YouTube videos
• User-generated content / case studies
• Website speed
